ORIGIN excerpt:

My dreams are tangled around each other like plants vying for the best spot in the sun. They strangle each other in their attempt to get the better of my reason. I know which one I truly want – I’ve wanted it all my life. But I’m being overtaken by a new desire, a raging, unpredictable dream that could destroy everything I’ve worked for. (Origin, page 99)

Origin, by Jessica Khoury, is tame and wild all at the same time! I give Origin 4 books on the bookshelf!

Thoughts from Jessica:
In Origin, Pia grows in many ways, and one of the most important ways is that she matures in her self-perception. As kids, we tend to be atrociously self-centered. That’s just how kids work. Things like sacrifice and empathy are really hard concepts for kids to grasp, much less naturally possess. For Pia, these are even harder, because all her life she’s been taught not to sacrifice or empathize. She also grows a lot in what she knows about the world. Pia is severely sheltered, but when she sneaks out of Little Cam for the first time, her world is turned inside out. She discovers the world is much bigger and more complex than she ever imagined.

This is something we all face as teens, when we start to look at ourselves not as the center of the universe, but as a part of it. We begin to seek answers to where we come from, how we fit in, and what the point of it all is. We are no longer content with ignorance. Nor are we content with our dependence. One of the most important parts of coming of age is establishing independence. She may not be getting her driver’s license for the first time, but Pia is finding ways to make her own rules. She begins to question authority—and I think every single teen on the planet can relate to that! While these are natural processes for us to go through, for Pia, these things are dangerous. The people who control her don’t want her to come into her own, at least not yet. Ever feel like your parents are too over-protective? Like they’re always hovering over you, checking up on you, trying to make your decisions for you? For Pia, it’s that to an extreme. But in her case, her guardians act not out of love, but out of darker motives. Part of her coming of age is to think for herself and figure out a way to defy them.

Origin’s Synopsis:

Pia has grown up in a secret laboratory hidden deep in the Amazon rainforest. She was raised by a team of scientists who have created her to be the start of a new immortal race. But on the night of her seventeenth birthday, Pia discovers a hole in the electric fence that surrounds her sterile home–and sneaks outside the compound for the first time in her life. Free in the jungle, Pia meets Eio, a boy from a nearby village. Together, they embark on a race against time to discover the truth about Pia’s origin–a truth with deadly consequences that will change their lives forever.
