Enchanted by Alethea Kontis (Review & Giveaway)

27 June 2012 9 Comments

Sunday is my favorite day of the week, and now Sunday is one of my new favorite characters.  Enchanted, by Alethea Kontis, follows the coming-of-age story of the youngest, seventh sister, Sunday.  The retelling and twisting of some of my favorite fairytales fill the pages of this quirky novel.  The use of so many intricately  thought out characters does cause some confusion. Once you become familiar with all of them, they give the story depth and motivate the main characters.

When I first picked up the novel I was drawn to it’s beauty and intrigued by the poem introducing the seven sisters, but I was worried it might a bit too juvenile for my taste.  While ‘Young Adult’ refers to a wide range of ages, Enchanted sits comfortably in the ‘Young’ category, but can be enjoyed by ‘Adults’. The tale is sweet, fun-loving, family-friendly, and enchanting!

If you love the television show ‘Once Upon A Time’, or enjoyed the recently released Snow White movie (NOT the Huntsman), then you will probably find yourself falling in love with Enchanted.  Although the story is tied together with a beautiful bow at the end, I still find myself thinking about Sunday and Rumbold (the prince), and wondering what might happen next in their story.

I give Enchanted 4 books on the bookshelf!

Enchanted Synopsis:

It isn’t easy being the rather overlooked and unhappy youngest sibling to sisters named for the other six days of the week. Sunday’s only comfort is writing stories, although what she writes has a terrible tendency to come true.

When Sunday meets an enchanted frog who asks about her stories, the two become friends. Soon that friendship deepens into something magical. One night Sunday kisses her frog goodbye and leaves, not realizing that her love has transformed him back into Rumbold, the crown prince of Arilland—and a man Sunday’s family despises.

The prince returns to his castle, intent on making Sunday fall in love with him as the man he is, not the frog he was. But Sunday is not so easy to woo. How can she feel such a strange, strong attraction for this prince she barely knows? And what twisted secrets lie hidden in his past—and hers?

I’m going to answer a bit differently! My favorite reimagining of a fairytale is the Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier–the first book is a retelling of the Seven Swans. I think that’s an ok answer since Enchanted is also a reimagining :)
