Since you have received your acceptance letter, it is time to let the truth sink in: University really is happening! Before you start panicking, you have still got a few weeks around to plan for the big move and ensure that you make your new abode as comfortable and viable as possible. While it may be tempting to go overboard and buy everything you think you will ever need, it is important to remember that universities don’t exist on another planet and are often equipped with nuts and bolts, which you need to be aware of before running rampant on a shopping spree. Here are a few student essentials for university in UK and also seemingly important things that you are really not going to be needing!

Study Essentials

  • Laptop – Laptop is a must buy if you don’t already own one, since going to uni isn’t all Netflix binges and Jägerbombs; you’ll need to work hard.
  • Voice recording app/ Dictaphone – Recording and replaying your lectures can serve as a life-saver.
  • External hard drive – When your laptop crashes mere minutes before a strict deadline, you will thank your lucky stars your work is backed up.

What Not to Buy

  • Textbooks – Buying textbooks should wait until after you arrive at your university and learn what you will need.
  • Dictionary – Let’s face it; it will be used as a doorstop!
  • Desktop computer – A desktop computer doesn’t allow you the freedom of taking your computer with you on the go.

Buying for the Halls

  • A wok- A wok works wonders when you are deep-frying, boiling, steaming, or just frying. In a nutshell, your go-to tool for most culinary needs.
  • Bedding – Student digs don’t allow for a lot of decoration, so buying bedding essentials in UK is where you can add a bit of flare to your space.
  • Shower slippers – When sharing a shower space with a bunch of other people, you will need shower slippers to keep your feet off the dirty bathroom floor.

What not to buy

  • Kitchen sets – While kitchen sets appear to be great value for money, are you really ever going to use a pizza crisper, milk pan, or 4x measuring spoons?
  • TV – You already have your laptop or computer to watch anything you like, so why squander on a TV?
  • Fancy Paraphernalia – Refrain from making lavish purchases and leave all your fancy trinkets, lamps, and rugs at home.
